July 2: arriving in Spain

This morning, my old roommate drove me to the airport on her way to work. It felt like old times; our morning routines.

I arrived at the airport so grateful and ready. I bought my favourite deodorant and some tissues, and then headed to find my gate. The airport was busy – holiday time – but I found my way with ease, floating.

I flew AirEuropa which was my first time, and very surprised how comfortable and modern it was. I read my book, and got a little nervous with the landing because of the wind. Safe and sound, I transferred to terminal 4 with the bus and got to the bus terminal. My bus was 15 minutes delayed but AC was heaven. A very relaxing 2.5 hour bus ride to Burgos.

Burgos; where I finished walking last year. Here I took the bus, and this year I return at the same bus terminal. I was enamored by the view of the cathedral in front of me.

I booked a hotel for the night to get settled. No matter how many Caminos, the first night jitters are real. It’s like I completely forget I’ve done this all before.

Burgos is so special to me. I’ve cried here so many times, all sorts of tears. The first time I sat on this bench in 2022, I called my dad. so now, this bench holds extra powers.

I visited my favourite spots from memory, reminiscing on memories of a wine and frozen yoghurt with carrot jam.

What made tonight even better, was that Spain was playing against Austria in the World Cup, so the energy was extra special.

I wandered trying to absorb the energy but also frantically packing and repacking my backpack. It still feels a little bulky but slowly things will start to get smaller.

I watch the sunset, smiling that I’m here and this is real. And I am ready.

I took a shower and packed my backpack for the final first time. And as I was browsing where I might want to walk tomorrow, there was a sound – fireworks.

If you know anything about my past Caminos, the number of times I’ve been blessed with fireworks is magical. It’s really my sign. Also, the moon!!!

You are ready. You are at peace and you have everything you need to go on.

    (It’s Isa :))

The image that is staying with me after this entry is of that bench, and it makes me think of how places, objects, views, all hold memories. It must be wonderful to be able to go back and retrace from memory.
